Consumer care requirements

As with all barberries, Crimson Cutie is adaptable but best in any well-drained soil location. Water regularly after planting. Heat and drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring before new growth begins.

Sun/shade requirements

Crimson Cutie prefers a sunny location in order to enjoy the full effect of its rich, purplish-red foliage. Like other barberries, partial shade is tolerated, but color is less dramatic.

Habit

Forms a mound with little pruning. A light trim in late spring will enhance shape. Because seeds are not viable, there is no need to trim after flowering to deter seedlings.

Crimson Cutie represents the first in a series of non-invasive Japanese barberries bred and tested by the University of Connecticut. Living up to its WorryFree collection name, Crimson Cutie will not produce nuisance seedlings or spread to unwanted areas. It’s approved for sale in New York State by the Department of Environmental Conservation. This replacement for Crimson Pygmy is excellent as a low hedge or border and is deer resistant. Can be used as an accent or foundation plant in addition to a low hedge and border.
